Educational Experience

I was born in South Boston, Virginia where my parents grew up as tobacco farmers. My parents and I moved to Richmond, Virginia when I was only 7 years old. I attended Chimborazo Elementary School and East End Middle School which are both located in the city of Richmond. Upon high school, my parents moved to the County of Henrico, where I attended and graduated from Varina High School.

I attended Strayer University and graduated with my Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.

Military Experience

Immediately after I graduated from high school, I joined the United States Army. I began my basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and continued my service at Ft. Lewis, WA. After my service of active duty in the military, I was honorably discharged and returned back to Richmond, Virginia where I joined the National Guard.

Law Enforcement Experience

I began my law enforcement career with the Richmond City Sheriff's Department in 1995. I was a deputy that worked in the back of the jail and was also assigned other positions within the department.

Approximately two years later, I was hired with the Richmond Police Department.  I worked as a patrolman, community intelligence officer and training officer.  As a training officer, I had the pleasure of working with many diverse groups, particularly through the Theme Academies that the police department sponsored for the citizens of Richmond. Those academies focused on community policing, partnerships and community development. I saw that as an opportunity to give back.

After nine years at the Richmond Police Department, I returned back to the Richmond City Sheriff’s Department as the Training Director. I was also assigned to and supervised various other divisions within the department. My last assignment was Courthouse Commander at the John Marshall Court Building. I was promoted through the ranks and resigned from the department as a Major. While working full time at the Richmond Police Department, I also worked part-time with Richmond City Public Schools as a substitute teacher. I was given the opportunity to educate, motivate and encourage our city youth.

I have demonstrated my dedication and commitment in serving the citizens of Richmond. My slogan (Putting “RVA” First) means as Sheriff I will continue beyond measure in helping to make Richmond a safer place for all.  I’m running for Sheriff because I believe that I will be that effective leader that Richmond deserves.  I will to work to ensure leadership that will be transparent, responsible and accountable to the citizens they serve. I will be committed in providing the necessary changes to move the department forward. I will focus on safety and security of the jail and courthouses, mental health reform & healthcare for inmates, community outreach programs, providing the most advanced training/technology for employees and building partnerships with other law enforcement agencies within the city to help reduce crime. I will maximize all resources available for the betterment of the department and the city, to include maintaining and keeping a balanced budget.  I will promote a positive work environment and provide opportunities in career development/advancement for all. My goal for the Richmond City Sheriff’s Department is to become the most dominant department in the state of Virginia and together WE can accomplish that goal. As Sheriff, I will always "Put RVA First".
